Data relating to eating disorders has exploded in recent years, fuelled both by the COVID pandemic and the ever-expanding influence of social media into every aspect of our lives. Indeed, in the UK alone eating disorders increased 42% vs pre-pandemic levels (Source NHS Digital) as social media and conspiracy theories fanned the flames of people’s anxieties. Furthermore, a strong correlation between social media and disorder eating has been found in research whereby in three quarters of disorder eating cases social media use was also present (Wilksch & O’Shea et al., 2019). The outcome can be devastating with physical and emotional consequences.
Eating disorders affect many individuals around the world and are becoming ever more prevalent in younger people increasing their risk of death in the following 5-years multi-fold. It is time more attention was given to them along with the fad, follow and misinformation cultures that can drive social media “likes” but leave real and lasting damage. We must make it a priority to not only raise awareness and create a culture of acceptance and understanding for such complex mental health conditions but also to enable and empower young adults to think critically about their relationship with food and nutrition as seen through the potent lens of the internet and social media.
The graphic novel, “The Dark Side of Food,” is an inspiring example of how tackling a complicated subject can be informative yet captivating. This thrilling graphic novel embraces the challenge of spreading awareness about the devastating effects of eating disorders, framing it within the wider context of enabling everyone online to stand-up and find their voice.
While social media has given the world an instantaneous web of connections to unite friends and loved ones, inform, educate and overall come together, it can also be a big divider and an efficient 24/7 tool for bullies with the inescapable cruelty that accompanies them. The story follows a diverse group of heroes who embark on a mission to uncover a conspiracy that threatens our very existence. They recognise that the world will not change unless they follow their principles and break away from the norm of following individuals on social media. In doing so the power dynamic and abuse from people of influence on social media can have very real implications from trolling to harm in the real world.
“The Dark Side of Food” is not just another graphic novel; it’s a call to action. It challenges readers to think critically about their relationship with food and nutrition and showcases the power of raising your voice and determination. It reminds us that we all have the power to make a change, no matter how small. The authors, Harleen and Andrew, have taken their desire to elevate every voice, not just through the book but by bringing to life an imagined social network platform that hopes to be safer and more empowering, whereby every positive word has the power to create real positive change. They believe every imprint left on this earth becomes part of the DNA for the future and thus through Imprint.live they encourage users to follow a principle and not a person to champion what they value and what makes us human. Allowing freedom of speech without the fear of retribution and bringing the power dynamic back in check to create a healthier online discourse.
